SAS Group pax up 5% in Sep-2011

SAS Group announced (07-Oct-2011) the following traffic highlights in Sep-2011:

• Passenger numbers:
  • Scheduled: 2.6 million, +4.7% year-on-year;
    • Scandinavian Airlines: 2,190,000, +4.9%;
    • Wideroe: 231,000, +15.5%;
    • Blue1: 138,000, -11.5%;
• Passenger load factor: , 0%;
  • Scheduled: 74.6%, +0.3ppts;
    • Scandinavian Airlines: 76.2%, +0.7ppts;
    • Wideroe: 60.2%, +0.1ppts;

  Air France-KLM has reported an operating loss of EUR353 million for 2011, a significant turnaround from its 2010 profit of EUR28 million - and follows Lufthansa's 18% year-on-year decline in operating profit to EUR820 million last year. This has been a difficult year for the Franco-Dutch airline group, as it battled rising fuel prices and uncertainty across many of its markets. The start of 2012 saw the Group launch ‘Transform 15’, its turnaround programme aimed at restoring profitability. The 2011 loss emphasises the need for this programme to deliver results, given a continuing uncertain outlook as Europe's economic troubles persist amid high fuel prices.

  The Group’s revenue was unable to absorb rising fuel expenses; although total revenues increased by 4.5% year-on-year to EUR24.36 billion, operating costs rose 6.2% to EUR24.72 billion. Fuel expenses alone surged 16.3% year-on-year.

• Changes in Northern Europe: Finnair outsources European routes to Flybe; Skyways & City Airline fold

  The North European market underwent another shock wave this week with the grounding of Skyways Express and its subsidiary City Airline and the announcement that Finnair is moving ahead with its plans to outsource its short-haul operations to a much lower-cost airline through forging an agreement with Flybe Nordic that covers one third of its European network and 12 Embraer aircraft. The two events are unrelated though are indicative of a market undergoing a fundamental structural change spelling the evaporation of small, independent regional airlines and the disbanding of the traditional operating model of the legacy carriers in Europe, although Finnair still has to demonstrate how its JV with Flybe will bring its short-haul operation back to profitability.

  Stockholm-Arlanda Airport, Sweden-based Skyways Express and Gothenburg, Sweden-based City Airline have cancelled all flights and stopped all payments with immediate effect (22-May-2012) after the owners of the company decided not to provide any further funds.
