Shenzhen International completes 24% acquisition of Shenzhen Airlines

Shenzhen International Holdings Limited announced (04-Jan-2012) the company completed the acquisition of a 24% equity interest in Shenzhen Airlines Company Limited (Shenzhen Airlines) on 04-Jan-2012. As at the completion of the transaction, Shenzhen International has increased its indirect equity interest in Shenzhen Airlines from 25% to 49%, while the remaining 51% is owned by Air China Limited. Shenzhen International Holdings stated Shenzhen Airlines contributed a profit of HKD187 million (USD24.1 million) to the company in 1H2011, representing an approximate 3.5-fold increase from a profit of HKD41.75 million in the corresponding period of the previous year. Star poised to boost presence in North Asian market with addition of EVA
15-Dec-2011Star Alliance is planning a key step forward in boosting its presence in the fast-growing North Asian aviation market by adding EVA Airways, Taiwan's second largest carrier. EVA will be mentored by Air China, which currently is the only Star member in greater China although Shenzhen Airlines is also now in the process of joining the alliance.
EVA's expected entry into Star follows the entry earlier this year of rival Taiwanese carrier China Airlines into SkyTeam, the largest alliance grouping in greater China and North Asia. Star is now striving to close the gap in North Asia between it and SkyTeam by adding multiple new members in greater China.
EVA executives early this year stated the carrier had submitted an application to join Star. EVA’s executive team, led by chairmen James Jeng, attended this week’s Star chief executive board meeting in Addis Ababa to further promote its application. Star’s existing members are understood to be in favour of EVA’s application and a formal announcement will be made in Taipei in the coming months. As the process of joining Star takes 18 to 24 months, EVA could formally join Star as early as 2013.

New routes to China to flourish in the next few years
23-May-2012China's leading airports are on the cusp of strong international growth, with several new routes to be launched in the coming 12 to 24 months. Growth will be driven by foreign and local needs: countries will have greater needs to further link with China while locally there will be an increasing propensity to travel among the Chinese population as incomes rise, while high-speed rail expansion will push Chinese airlines to grow internationally, at the same time providing feed opportunities for foreign carriers at the main Chinese gateways.
But growth is not only expected at the main Chinese hubs. Second tier airports can also look forward to increasing air services as the Government supports expansion from these hubs and as the LCC revolution takes hold in North Asia. New carriers across the region will be looking for new route opportunities, fuelling rapid growth at non-congested Chinese gateways. China's own second tier airlines are also looking to expand abroad, mainly within the Asia Pacific region, which will spur development at the provincial capitals across China's vast interior and economic zones.
