Singapore Airlines reports (16-Jan-2012) the following traffic highlights in Dec-2011:

• Passenger numbers: 1.5 million, +1.3% year-on-year;
• Passenger load factor: 79.6%, -1.1 ppts;
  • East Asia: 78.8%, -4.6 ppts;
  • Americas: 81.1%, +4.2 ppts;
  • Europe: 76.3%, -0.8 ppt;
  • South West Pacific: 84.7%, -1.3 ppts;
  • West Asia and Africa: 76.1%, -2.7 ppts;
• SIA Cargo:
  • Cargo volume: 108,500 tonnes, +8.5%;
  • Cargo load factor: 63.6%, +0.1 ppt;
    • East Asia: 57.8%, -0.4 ppt;
    • Americas: 65.3%, +0.8 ppt;
    • Europe: 72.6%, +4.6 ppts;
    • South West Pacific: 59.6%, -1.3 ppts;

  Asia Pacific airlines are coming off a difficult 2011, thanks to stubbornly high fuel prices and weaker yields in a challenging global economic environment. But not all the problems are necessarily external. Overcapacity is looming as a threat in 2012 as the region's full service airlines gear up for a period of growth and change in the coming decade. Balancing capacity and demand in choppy and unpredictable economic times is not easy and the coming year looks like being one in which at least temporary oversupply is very likely.

  Record aircraft delivery levels are being maintained even as traffic growth slows. The upshot of that combination of factors is lower load factors and reduced yields, made more notable as the finance sector - a key user of premium services - is undergoing sometimes savage staff cutbacks. That in turn implies damage to airlines' bottom lines in what is now an intensely competitive market, with low cost airlines, Gulf carriers and Chinese airlines each vying for larger shares of markets which were historically the territory of the region's flag carriers.

  The business environment for air cargo has continued to weaken in 4Q2011, with IATA in its 4Q2011 Cargo E-Chartbook labelling the outlook for freight profitability as “pessimistic” and the revenue outlook as “weak”. This has occurred amid declining cargo rates, which has placed downward pressure on yields and revenues, while costs have remained high, despite some recent relief from declining jet fuel prices in Dec-2011 and reduced labour costs.

  Reflecting pressures in the cargo market, Jade Cargo International on 31-Dec-2011 announced the temporary suspension of its services "due to overall weak air cargo demand". The carrier added the suspension of service will "provide the shareholders with an opportunity to coordinate with stakeholders to continue with the restructuring of the company’s financial structure". As a result of the suspension, the carrier's six Boeing 747-400ERFs aircraft have temporarily been grounded. According to reports in Boersen Zeitung, Jade Cargo no longer has the funds to purchase fuel for its six 747 aircraft. Lufthansa Cargo stated the company "believes in the future" of Jade and "hopes to find a solution in the next few weeks".
