South Korea's cargo volume down in 3Q2011

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs reports (24-Oct-2011) the following cargo traffic highlights for the three months ended Sep-2011:

• Cargo volume: 884,222 tonnes, -0.7% year-on-year;
  • Domestic: 68,991 tonnes, +8.0%;
  • By carrier:
    • Korean Air: 45,722 tonnes, +5.2%;
    • Asiana:10,651 tonnes, +1.9%;
    • Air Busan: 3611 tonnes, +1.1%;
    • Jeju Air: 3056 tonnes, +47.9%;
    • T’way: 1932 tonnes, +2476%;
    • Jin Air: 1969 tonnes, +8.3%;
    • Eastar Jet: 2050 tonnes, -16.9%;
  • International: 815,232 tonnes, -1.4%;
  • By region:
    • Japan: 106,957 tonnes, -9.0%;
    • Americas: 174,793 tonnes, -4.9%;
    • Southeast Asia: 212,617 tonnes, +1.5%;

  Asia Pacific airlines are coming off a difficult 2011, thanks to stubbornly high fuel prices and weaker yields in a challenging global economic environment. But not all the problems are necessarily external. Overcapacity is looming as a threat in 2012 as the region's full service airlines gear up for a period of growth and change in the coming decade. Balancing capacity and demand in choppy and unpredictable economic times is not easy and the coming year looks like being one in which at least temporary oversupply is very likely.

  Record aircraft delivery levels are being maintained even as traffic growth slows. The upshot of that combination of factors is lower load factors and reduced yields, made more notable as the finance sector - a key user of premium services - is undergoing sometimes savage staff cutbacks. That in turn implies damage to airlines' bottom lines in what is now an intensely competitive market, with low cost airlines, Gulf carriers and Chinese airlines each vying for larger shares of markets which were historically the territory of the region's flag carriers.

  Airlines and airports are feeling the impact of the current global economic weakness and declining consumer spending in Europe, which is having a noticeable impact on air cargo volumes. Cargo traffic, which generated USD66 billion in revenue in 2010, has declined every month since May-2011, according to IATA upon the release of its Oct-2011 traffic results, with a 4.7% year-on-year reduction in cargo demand in Oct-2011 amid reduced manufacturing confidence and businesses switching to slower modes of transport.

  “Cargo is the story of the month. Since mid-year the market has shrunk by almost 5% and this is far greater than the 1% fall in world trade. Air freight is among the first sectors to suffer when businesses confidence declines,” IATA director general and CEO Tony Tyler said. Meanwhile, Boeing CEO Jim McNerney separately stated the company has seen a softening of freight demand in recent months, describing the freight market as a “watch item”.
