Tiger Airways pax numbers down 12% in Dec-2011, load factor down 8 ppts

Tiger Airways reports (10-Jan-2012) the following traffic highlights:
- Dec-2011:
- Passenger numbers: 481,000, -12% year-on-year;
- Passenger load factor: 83%, -8.0 ppts;
- 12 months ended Dec-2011:
- Passenger numbers: 5.7 million, stable;

Tiger Airways: “Tiger Airways Singapore increased capacity by 60% in December 2011 compared to December 2010, which included new services to the Philippines (Cebu and Davao) and India (Bangalore). Tiger places big bet on Indonesia with re-launch of Mandala
09-Feb-2012Tiger Airways is banking the booming Indonesian market can support another new carrier and absorb over the next 14 months at least 10 A320s from the struggling airline group’s surplus fleet. Singapore-based Tiger has not yet invested a penny into Mandala Airlines but has a lot at stake as the Indonesian carrier plans to resume services in April following a 15-month hiatus, using Tiger’s aircraft and business model. While it only had to pay a token one dollar for its 33% stake in Mandala, Tiger along with Mandala’s other new investors will be providing a loan to cover re-launch costs and will need to continue pumping in capital until the airline becomes profitable, a potentially challenging proposition given current market conditions in Indonesia.
The new Tiger-backed Mandala will compete against three powerful LCCs in the Indonesian market – Lion Air, Indonesia AirAsia and Garuda Indonesia budget unit Citilink. These carriers combined now operate about 100 aircraft and are all expanding at high double-digit rates. Mandala will also have to compete against Garuda’s fast-expanding mainline operation and three second tier Indonesian carriers – Batavia Air, Sriwijaya Air and Merpati Nusantara Airlines – which also currently operate a combined fleet of about 100 aircraft and offer low fares, although they are not generally considered to be LCCs.

Asia Pacific airlines' "ambitious fleet plans" threaten excess capacity, lower load factors in 2012
27-Jan-2012Asia Pacific airlines are coming off a difficult 2011, thanks to stubbornly high fuel prices and weaker yields in a challenging global economic environment. But not all the problems are necessarily external. Overcapacity is looming as a threat in 2012 as the region's full service airlines gear up for a period of growth and change in the coming decade. Balancing capacity and demand in choppy and unpredictable economic times is not easy and the coming year looks like being one in which at least temporary oversupply is very likely.
Record aircraft delivery levels are being maintained even as traffic growth slows. The upshot of that combination of factors is lower load factors and reduced yields, made more notable as the finance sector - a key user of premium services - is undergoing sometimes savage staff cutbacks. That in turn implies damage to airlines' bottom lines in what is now an intensely competitive market, with low cost airlines, Gulf carriers and Chinese airlines each vying for larger shares of markets which were historically the territory of the region's flag carriers.
