Turkey to sell further stake in Turkish Airlines

Turkey is reportedly preparing to sell a further stake in Turkish Airlines with the nation's privatisation agency expected to hear bids to advise on the sale on 15-Feb-2011 (Financial Times, 14-Feb-2011). The agency last month shortlisted bidders to include consortia led by Citigroup, Credit Agricole, Goldman Sachs, HSBC, UniCredit and UBS. Turkey holds a 49% stake in the carrier, valued at around USD1.62 billion based on the closing share price on 11-Feb-2011.

Pegasus Airlines bets on liberalisation in Turkey’s international market with 100-aircraft order
23-Apr-2012Turkish low-cost carrier Pegasus Airlines is placing a big bet that Turkey’s market will liberalise over the next decade, enabling the carrier to expand its fleet to between 100 and 140 aircraft. Pegasus currently operates 43 narrowbody aircraft and has been negotiating since last year with Airbus and Boeing an order for 100 A320neos or Boeing 737-800 MAX. Pegasus CEO Sertac Haybat said on the sidelines of last week’s CAPA Airlines in Transition CEO Summit in Istanbul that he expects the 100-aircraft order will be placed within one month and deliveries will be spread out over six to seven years.
My Haybat expects the new aircraft will primarily be used to accelerate expansion of Pegasus’ international network, including to new destinations in the Indian subcontinent that are not within range of its fleet of current generation 737-800s. But he acknowledges international expansion will only be possible if bilaterals are liberalised.

Flag carriers of the former Yugoslavia urged to unite
10-Apr-2012National carriers in countries of the former Yugoslavia are struggling to survive in the current economic environment as operating costs rise and they face competition from large network carriers and expanding low-cost carriers. The former Yugoslavian nations of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia all have national airlines but are struggling to become profitable, while the national carriers of Kosovo and Macedonia have already failed and have not been revived.
Association of European Airlines (AEA) secretary general Ulrich Schulte Strathaus recently told Slovenian newspaper Dnevnik that national carriers in the former Yugoslavia need to unite into a single carrier in order to survive. Mr Strathaus stated, “the once single Yugoslav market is now fragmented and a regional solution is necessary. The region needs an airline that would cover local needs and connect with global hubs.”
The main airlines in the region are Bosnia and Herzegovina’s B&H Airlines, Croatia’s Croatia Airlines, Montenegro’s Montenegro Airlines, Serbia’s Jat Airways and Slovenia’s Adria Airways.
