Virgin Blue Group announces airport check-in systems back online

Virgin Blue Group announced (27-Sep-2010) its airport check-in and boarding systems are now back online and will be operating as normal from 27-Sep-2010. Group Executive, Corporate Communications, Danielle Keighery, stated the carrier is hoping for minimal delays. The group’s check-in and reservation system crashed just after 08:00 on 26-Sep-2010, due to a hardware failure (AAP/Sydney Morning Herald, 27-Sep-2010) The carrier was forced to operate manual systems instead. Approximately 20% of flights were cancelled over the day. Jetstar’s check-in systems also broke down twice over the day, each for approximately 15 minutes, but no services were affected. more]

  It took low-cost long-haul carrier AirAsia X four years to secure the right to serve Sydney, and the carrier is now putting the matter behind it following its confirmation it will serve the Australian city from Kuala Lumpur with a daily service from 01-Apr-2012, with the likelihood of a double daily to follow. Another Australian city will later be added, to reach its goal of serving five Australian cities by the end of 2013. Also on the carrier's expansion list is increased services to its existing Asian destinations, many of which are not served daily.

  While the Sydney route progressed in likelihood following restrictions being lifted in Jun-2011, the route became a certainty after start-up competitor Scoot said it would make Sydney its first destination from the middle of this year. The possibility of Malaysia letting a competitor based in Singapore, its fierce rival, serve Sydney before a Malaysian low-cost carrier was simply unacceptable.

  Airline margins have been “squeezed” in 2011, due to sharply higher fuel prices, according to the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA), although the association noted that the region’s airlines are faring better than airlines in other regions as they continue to benefit from relatively strong economic growth in developing economies across the region.

  AAPA, at the 55th Assembly of Presidents in Seoul earlier this month, stated its member carriers remain "extremely vigilant" about the immediate threats to growth and profitability associated with a potential slowdown in the global economy and fuel prices that have already risen 40% this year. The association also cautioned that while strong domestic spending is ensuring key Asian economies remain resilient, there is increasing concern about the possible impact of further financial instability in Europe and the US moving into 2012.
