DOT grants oneworld antitrust immunity
In the same week as the European Commission approved antitrust immunity for the American-British Airways-Iberia joint venture, the US Department of Transportation followed suit yesterday finalising its 13-Feb-2010 decision granting antitrust immunity to American Airlines and four international partners, allowing them to form an integrated global alliance under oneworld.
Japan aviation policy under a Kan-do government. Bureaucracy the stumbling block to a new future
Once again Japan has a new prime minister, as the revolving door continues to spin. Mr Naoto Kan is Japan’s eighth Prime Minister to hold office this century (and that includes Junichiro Koizumi, who lasted a remarkable four years). The new incumbent PM is basically an economic reformer while, importantly, Transport Minister, Seiji Maehara, remains. As JAL stumbles, the entire Japanese aviation system must drag itself into the new world if it is to have a future. This Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation report considers whether the new leadership will bring with it any change in aviation policy and, importantly, looks at the forces of inertia which will need to be overcome.

American’s cornerstone strategy coupled with its impending antitrust immunity with British Airways/Iberia and JAL could reap higher benefits than the USD500 million predicted by the company, according to MIT International Center for Air Transportation Research Engineer Bill Swelbar. The blogger, who noted AMR management was headed to Wall Street this week to make its own case, also said that observers may be underestimating American’s chances of success, almost ignoring its progress in cutting costs.

American in New York; battles Delta and United as alliances and non-legacies influence strategy
American's moves this week are another puzzle piece in the legacy airlines' Big Apple strategies, after United wooed Continental to Star Alliance to strengthen the New York gateway over Newark and Delta set its sights to become the leading carrier in and out of New York. Meanwhile, the role of the non-legacy airlines moves into centre stage
US airline outlook: Recoupling with GDP; Labor; Strikes; Pricing; Alliances; Haneda
There were plenty of nuggets at yesterday's JP Morgan Aviation, Transportation and Defense conference on the outlook for the US airline industry, with some revealing commentary on the economic recovery and pricing environment, labor and strike threats, as well as alliances and access to Tokyo Haneda Airport.
