CAPA’s Hottest Airlines to watch in 2011: Europe
The European airline market was battered by the global financial crisis, recording a combined loss of USD4.3 billion in 2009, according to IATA. Europe's tepid economic recovery, the ash cloud crisis, difficulties in cutting capacity and massive structural changes within the short-haul market have conspired to make 2010 another challenging year. Losses are anticipated at USD1.3 billion in 2010, making it the only region to be unprofitable in an otherwise strong year for recovery elsewhere. But there are some bright spots in the region. In this report, CAPA reviews the European airlines expected to make waves in 2011.
Baboo has wings clipped
Swiss regional airline Baboo, or Flybaboo as it is marketed, has announced plans to eliminate services from its main base at Geneva to London City and Athens airports from Nov-2010 as it continues to restructure in the face of ongoing losses. Baboo, which expanded its operations to include 18 destinations, will now serve just 10 routes over winter 2010/11.
Baboo - Small and flexible is good – but is it enough?
Baboo, which serves 18 destinations from Geneva, ended 2008 with positive results, despite an unfavourable economic environment, claiming it was able to achieve strong growth thanks to a sound expansion strategy, strong management and the support of its main investor, the M1 Group.
