American Eagle’s exit from San Juan leaves gap in small intra-Caribbean markets
American Eagle appears closer to ending a 41-year era with the planned phase-out of its base in San Juan as part of a network overhaul in the Chapter 11 restructuring of its parent American Airlines. Closing San Juan was becoming more apparent as the fleet supporting its operations in the Caribbean – the ATR 72 – is being phased out at the end of next year. But other carriers could capitalise on American’s exit either through backfilling the flights or forging partnerships to feed the islands.
The carrier has sent out a announcement to employees in San Juan explaining the base would be closing during a phase-out period ending in March 2013, CAPA has learned.
The cuts are only being applied to American Eagle’s operations in San Juan, not American’s mainline operations.
CAPA’s Hottest Airlines to watch in 2011: Europe
The European airline market was battered by the global financial crisis, recording a combined loss of USD4.3 billion in 2009, according to IATA. Europe's tepid economic recovery, the ash cloud crisis, difficulties in cutting capacity and massive structural changes within the short-haul market have conspired to make 2010 another challenging year. Losses are anticipated at USD1.3 billion in 2010, making it the only region to be unprofitable in an otherwise strong year for recovery elsewhere. But there are some bright spots in the region. In this report, CAPA reviews the European airlines expected to make waves in 2011.
JetBlue reins in growth, yields improving
JetBlue CEO Dave Barger outlined his carrier's strategy for fiscal success at last week's Bank of America Merrill Lynch Global Transportation conference with a simple message – cash flow yields sustainable growth. That’s not something JetBlue has focused on in the past, but now, for the New York-based company, it is all about cash flow.
Complacency is the biggest risk to airline safety record in the US
As regional airlines gather this week for the Regional Airline Association convention in Milwaukee, they remain under the safety cloud created by the 12-Feb-2009 Colgan Airways accident, but they should be heartened by last week’s National Transportation Safety Board professionalism symposium which gave the industry the clear good marks. Many panelists expressed how impressed they were with some regional programs. Even so, it also provided enough criticism to keep that cloud overhead. Indeed, it is hoped that the Regional Airline Association will give a progress report on its single level of safety initiative launched after Colgan. Many questions remain surrounding 'good regionals' and 'bad regionals'.
