El Al's Sao Paulo departure highlights carrier's stagnation
El Al's cancellation of its thrice-weekly flights between its Tel Aviv base and Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos Airport come after the carrier began the route two years ago. It has cited high fuel and security costs as reasons for its termination.
Over the past few months, a variety of initiatives have been taken by El Al to reverse its weakening financial position. Temporary staff will be jettisoned, fuel-inefficient aircraft will be retired and second bag charges have been imposed on some routes. But despite these efforts, profitability remains elusive.
El Al swings to net loss in 2Q2011. Shake-up in Israeli market ahead?
El Al Israel Airlines swung to a net loss of USD19.7 million in the three months ended 30-Jun-2011 (2Q2011) from a USD14.8 million net profit in 2Q2010, as costs grew at nearly three times the rate of revenue. The Tel Aviv-based carrier felt the impact of increasing fuel costs, a stronger shekel and rising competition in the quarter, prompting CEO and President Elyezer Shkedy to note that the company is working to adapt its strategies to meet challenging commercial realities.
European airlines ramp-up capacity to China
Asia Pacific, particularly China, is one of the current destination hotspots for European carriers, with connections between Europe and China improving in recent months and over the past couple of years. The initial focus was obviously on providing connectivity between key European hubs and the capital city of Beijing, with services to Shanghai also quite extensive, although a number of carriers are adding service to secondary, albeit still large destinations in China, such as Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqin, Urumqi, Sancha, Dalian and Harbin.
“Global” security still a distant goal
Aviation is faced with constant and often changing challenges but none has proven as intractable as the question of security in an age of terrorism. Following 9/11, the US put in place a vast number of policies that continue to be controversial both at home and abroad. And those actions have had wide-ranging effects.
Air China tops airline Enterprise Value rankings; Delta second; no LCCs in top 10
It would appear China has already reached its aim of creating a world-beating "super carrier" – at least in terms of financial size. Air China is by far the world’s biggest airline, based on a current ranking of listed airlines’ Enterprise Values (EV) assembled by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA).
So you think you know your airline market capitalisation: Part 3
The first part of this three-part report on airline market capitalisations described how Air China is valued more on the stock exchange than US carriers United-Continental, JetBlue, Hawaiian Air, AirTran, US Airways, American Airlines, Republic Airways and Skywest combined. In this final section, CAPA reviews some further interesting facts from the equity investment world.
