Japan’s forgotten airlines: the Japanese LCC segment
Japan’s two major airlines – Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways – have featured prominently in the news of late, but very little is known about Japan’s low cost carriers, despite five LCCs operating in the market for most of last decade. They are mostly small and fairly fragile, but JAL's tribulations and the opening of a new runway at Tokyo Haneda Airport later this year could finally give them the opportunity to soar.
LCCs in Japan, Korea and China. Massive growth potential to be realised in the next decade
The second decade of the 21st century will see low cost airlines arrive on a massive scale in North Asia. The region has not seen significant low cost airline entry to date – one of the few parts of the world to have missed the phenomenon. It is a major anomaly in this respect, because the geography, economy and demography of the three neighbouring countries of Japan, South Korea and China offer near-ideal conditions for LCC growth.
New entrants continue to be launched, despite challenging economic environment
Start-up carriers are continuing to enter the market in 2009, taking advantage of lower fuel and aircraft prices, as well as capacity reductions by rivals in some markets.
Fuji Dream Airlines to launch at the end of this month
With Asia’s carriers among the biggest losers in the current economic crisis, start-up carriers have been few and far between, in a region that is usually fertile ground for new airlines. However, the global downturn has not dissuaded Japan’s imaginatively named Fuji Dream Airlines from proceeding with its commercial launch, planned for later this month.
