Established in 1962, Merpati Nusantara Airlines is an airline based in Jakarta, Indonesia. The carrier operates scheduled domestic scheduled service as well as international service to East Timor and Indonesia from its main base at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. Indonesia is a nation with very impressive statistics that still remains somewhat off the beaten path and away from much global notice. Yet it is the world’s most populous Muslim nation and ranks fourth globally in total population. It is the largest nation in Southeast Asia and stretches from west of Malaysia to the north of Australia.

Indonesia is a high-potential aviation market, with a strong natural requirement for air services and a large population with rising incomes to support the industry. The rationalisation of domestic capacity over the past two years has helped restore financial health to the airline sector – to the point where Garuda Indonesia is planning a landmark IPO later this year. Overall domestic capacity levels fell 9.4% in 2008, with a further 12.7% contraction in 2009, meaning domestic capacity has returned to 2004 levels in 2009.

Composed of over 17,000 islands, of which some 6,000 are inhabited, and with a fast growing population now exceeding 240 million, Indonesia is a country with a very strong natural requirement for air services. Since the Indonesian Government set out some years ago to liberalise the country’s air services arrangements, not surprisingly there has been rapid growth in the number of Indonesian-based airlines operating both domestic and international services, and a massive uptake of flight opportunities by Indonesia’s people. This has created fresh challenges, and opportunities, for national carrier, Garuda Indonesia.
