British Airways' London City-JFK service could be just the niche Walsh wants
British Airways’ CEO, Willie Walsh, has vowed to continue expanding the carrier's US services and is considering services from London City Airport (LCY) to Boston, Chicago and Washington as trans-Atlantic traffic has remained “robust” despite the global financial downturn. The carrier already operates to New York JFK from London City, using A318 aircraft, one of the largest types able to use the extended ‘STOLport.’
Amsterdam’s poor traffic performance continues, but better news ahead?
Amsterdam Airport Schiphol reported another weak set of traffic figures for Jun-2009, handling 3.9 million passengers, down 12.4% year-on-year. Cargo volume was down 24% to 100,226 tonnes – a similar result to the previous month. Cargo volume for the six months ended 30-Jun-2009 is down 26.7% to 589,072 tonnes, while passenger numbers are down 11.2% to 20.1 million.
New York, New York. And slots, slots. Vale JetAmerica
WEEKLY REFLECTIONS WITH RON KUHLMANN & THE CENTRE. Due to its market size, its affluence and its strategic location, New York and its airports figure into many aviation networks and business plans. In the past week or so, two stories regarding New York service have bounced around the media and internet; one predictably absurd and the other a bold vision in hard times. One involved a serial failure team; the other a good idea, but at the wrong time?
OpenSkies’ first birthday. Will it be orphaned by birthday #2?
Paris-based OpenSkies celebrated its first anniversary of the launch of services on 19-Jun-2009, but the day passed without much fanfare. It didn't help that its once eager parent, British Airways, was reported in the media the same week to be considering winding up or selling the subsidiary, as part of cost cutting moves. That BA is now spruiking its new all-Business class twice daily service from London City Airport to New York (launching on 29-Sep-2009 with specially configured 32-seat A318s) is a clear vote of no-confidence in OpenSkies.
BAA's ‘resilient’ performance, but traffic continues to decline
Announcing results for the nine months ended Sep-08, Colin Matthews, BAA Chief Executive, stated, “BAA has delivered a resilient performance with results in line with forecasts. With trading conditions expected to remain challenging in the coming months, we are maintaining our sharp focus on operational improvement and a substantial programme of capital investment, which will lead to better passenger service standards and lower costs.”
The capital investment seems to mirror the British government’s decision to ‘spend its way’ out of the recession, which is now official in the UK. But traffic continues to decline, most worryingly at the ‘for sale’ Gatwick.
British Airways OpenSkies Paris-New York airline: beginning of new era - or just another error?
When British Airways’ new OpenSkies service pushes back from the gate at Paris’ user-friendly Orly Airport at 1055 this morning, bound for New York JFK, it becomes a living example of the potential of the recent Open Skies agreement between the US and the EU. But, coming close on the heels of the collapse of a handful of all-Business Class airlines, this operation – also using older, fuel-thirsty, B757 aircraft - might seem to be another venture doomed to fail. That will not be the case. This is more than just any old all-Business Class operation.
