Singapore Airlines' contraction strategy as load factors and yields dominate
Singapore Airlines (SIA) is a shrinking force, the price of regained profitability. SIA flew almost 13% fewer seat kilometers in Jun-2010 than it did in Jun-2008, even though the airline did expand capacity by 1.8% year-on-year. Over the same two-year period, Cathay Pacific has contracted its capacity by just 2%, whereas Emirates has expanded by close to 30%.
Cargo rout to hit passenger markets next
Asian exports are in free fall, cargo markets are in intensive care, and passenger markets will be next. Japan's GDP contracted a startling 3.3% in the fourth quarter of 2008, taking the annualised rate of decline to -12.7% – the most severe since the 1974 oil crisis – and worse is expected.
Singapore Airlines cutting capacity by 11% as global economic downturn bites
Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced plans to reduce capacity in the coming financial year, commencing April 2009, by 11% year-on-year, as it fortifies its response to a “sharp and swift” downturn in demand. In the course of the year, 17 aircraft will be decommissioned from the operating fleet. Before recession hit major markets, the plan was for only four aircraft to be phased out – one for conversion to a freighter, and three to be returned to lessors at completion of lease contracts.
Singapore Airlines' profit falls 43% - better than market expectations
Singapore Airlines Group (SIA) has disclosed a net profit of SGD337 million for the third quarter (ended 31-Dec-08), down (just) 42.8% year-on-year, as Group revenue declined 2.6% and costs rose 5.7%.
Singapore Airlines and Changi fall on hard times
Singapore Airlines (SIA) has announced further network cuts amid softening demand for travel across its network until the end of Mar-09, with the exception of the Middle East, where it is adding capacity to Abu Dhabi, Kuwait, Cairo and Dubai.
Asian air cargo markets shattered by global economic downturn
Asian cargo markets are bearing the brunt of the global economic slowdown, which in turn is having a severe financial impact on the region's airlines. IATA forecasts Asian airlines will report a USD600 million operating loss (USD1.1 billion net loss) in 2009, due in large part to their large exposure to the air cargo segment.
