South African Airways continues push into Central Africa

6-Feb-12 9:40 AM

Alongside the launch last week of non-stop service to Beijing, South African Airways (SAA) has been working on improving its connections in Africa, and has recently launched service to three Central African destinations: Pointe Noire in the Republic of the Congo, Kigali in Rwanda and Bujumbura in Burundi. This follows expansion last year into Ndola, Zambia.

United Airlines CEO, Jeff Smisek United Airlines eager to tap expected growth in US-Africa market

30-Dec-11 12:36 PM

United Airlines aims to further expand its network in Africa, the fast-growing market it only began serving last year and last month tripled its capacity in with the launch of Houston-Lagos service. But the rate of expansion will likely be relatively slow, reflecting some of the growing pains in Africa experienced by rival Delta Air Lines.

The opportunities in Africa for US carriers are huge given the current small number of flights in the market and the increasing economic ties between the US and several African countries. US-Africa has always been a modestly sized market that has traditionally been served primarily with connections via Europe. Slowly more direct services are opening up and over the next several years new flights are expected to be launched by US and African carriers.

Africa finally became the sixth and final continent to be added to United’s network in Jun-2010, when the carrier launched daily Boeing 767 service on the Washington Dulles-Accra route.

South African Airways profit increases as nation's smaller carriers Comair and 1time post losses

24-Sep-11 12:28 PM

South Africa has become a competitive domestic air market, which is taking its toll on the LCC segment in particular. The country’s largest and only long-haul carrier, South African Airways, increased its profit as its restructuring continues. But it joined rivals Comair, whose profit decreased, and loss-making carrier 1time in a cautious outlook owing to increased airport charges as well as the global threat of high fuel. Despite the turbulent times, newcomer Santaco Airlines hopes to launch this year and avoid airports with high fees.

SAA's new strategy focuses on expanding African network and east-west connections

27-Jul-11 3:44 PM

South African Airways (SAA) expects to report its third straight consecutive year of profit, achieving an unusual level of stability for a flag carrier that was in a near constant state of restructuring for most of the last decade. SAA is now starting to resume expansion, focusing primarily on growing its intra-African operation and offering new east-west connections. However, questions linger over the carrier’s ability to take on the rising Middle Eastern carriers as they continue their expansion into Africa.

Airport investment prospects in CIVETS countries – Republic of South Africa

7-Jul-11 3:56 PM

There's "BRIC" and "N11" and now CIVETS, a disparate collection of countries (Colombia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Egypt, Turkey and South Africa) that are all dynamic emerging economies with inflation under control and sophisticated financial systems with an absence of "sovereign debt bombs". In addition they have youthful populations. They also share common problems that could influence airport investors adversely, such as unemployment and corruption. In the final report in this series, we analyse South Africa.

Airports Company South Africa's traffic on the rise: three busiest airports perform strongly

7-Jun-11 10:30 AM

Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) reported an overall traffic increase for Apr-2011 for Cape Town International Airport, Durban King Shaka International Airport and Johannesburg Oliver R Tambo International Airport. The three busiest airports in Africa all showed an increase of at least 5% on Apr-2010, with the self-described “hub of southern Africa”, Johannesburg OR Tambo, increasing its traffic from a year ago by 8.1% passengers. All three airports have shown month-on-month increases since 2009.
