About

Founded in 1947, Southern Air Inc was an air cargo carrier that specialises in ACMI, charter and government operations. Southern Air Holdings entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy on 28-Sep-2012, completing financial restructuring and emerging from Chapter 11 in Apr-2013. Southern Air became a subsidiary of Atlas Air Worldwide. It was based at Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport, the carriers largest air operating hub.

In Jan-2016, Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings entered a definitive agreement to acquire Southern Air Holdings, parent company of Southern Air and Florida West International Airways, in an immediately accretive, all-cash, debt-free transaction valued at approximately USD110 million. Atlas Air completed the transaction in Apr-2016, after receiving US Department of Transportation approval. The acquisition provides Atlas Air with immediate entry into Boeing 737 and 777 operating platforms with opportunities for additional growth. Southern Air's five 737 and five 777 CMI aircraft will complement Atlas Air's 747 ACMI and charter operations, 747 and 767 CMI services and it 737, 757 and 777 dry leasing portfolio. The companies will have a combined fleet of more than 75 aircraft.

Atlas Air completed an operating certificate merger with Southern Air on 17-Nov-2021.
