Sri Lankan aviation set for expansion but government support critical

Sri Lanka’s national carrier, SriLankan Airlines, reported an operating loss of USD56.8 million in 2010, marking a 49% reduction in losses compared with 2009 levels, while Mihin Lanka turned around to achieve a USD3.8 million profit from a USD6.0 million loss in 2009. The figures were released in the Central Bank's 2010 annual report.

There are more than 30 airlines around the world that have publicly talked about tapping equity markets to help diversify funding sources, coinciding with an improved economic environment. Aircraft deliveries are also accelerating, with more than 1,300 aircraft scheduled for delivery this year alone, prompting the need for additional financing.

Sri Lanka’s aviation industry has suffered on several fronts in recent years, with its hub role to India diminished by that country's liberalisation of airline market access with its key trading partners, coupled with a major downturn in international tourism. Major policy and strategic changes in the aviation sector are now occurring, spearheaded by the impending full renationalisation of SriLankan Airlines, and development of a second international airport. Both these developments reflect Sri Lankan aviation's streamlined future role: supporting the national tourism industry, which has improved prospects thanks to the cessation of the long-running civil war in mid-2009.

SriLankan Airlines sees 80% increase in passenger traffic in Sep-2009 and Oct-2009

SriLankan Airlines Chairman, Nishantha Wickramasinghe stated the carrier is still performing well despite the global financial downturn, after seeing an 80% year-on-year increase in passenger numbers during Sep-2009 and Oct-2009.

SriLankan Airlines CEO, Manoj Gunawardena, announced in Aug-2009 that the carrier expects a turnaround by late 2010, with its growth forecast in line with projected recovery in the tourism industry. Sri Lanka’s 26 year civil war came to an end in May-2009 and is expected to bring about a revival for the nation’s economy. Tourist arrivals in Sri Lanka reportedly increased for the first time this year in Jun-2009, following the resolution of civil unrest.

IndiGo CEO, Bruce Ashby IndiGo: strong passenger traffic and market share growth continues in Mar-2009

IndiGo was one of the few Indian LCCs to report growth in demand in Mar-2009. The LCC handled 420,000 passengers last month, an increase of 13.9% year-on-year. The carrier also reported a load factor of 70% for the month - a healthy result by Indian domestic standards.
