Air China is by far the world’s biggest airline, based on a current ranking of listed airlines’ Enterprise Values (EV) assembled by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA).

In 2007-2008 the airlines most feared the rising cost of fuel and, especially in the US, used the expense to dramatically cut service, scale back operations, retire aircraft and reduce capacity. But the positive effects of those actions were almost immediately negated by the recession, which brought a whole new set of problems.

Southwest Airlines, the star performer in improving its unit revenues in recent months, continued to report double-digit yield growth in May-2010, but was trumped by United Airlines and Continental Airlines, both of which reported 20%+ growth in the month. JetBlue Airways and US Airways also reported double-digit growth in the month.
