Borg El Arab Airport serves the city of Alexandria and the surrounding Nile Delta metropolitan region in northern Egypt. Borg El Arab is one of two airports that serve Alexandria, the other being the more central, physically smaller but busier Alexandria International Airport (El Nouzha Airport). Alexandria International is closing in 2010 to allow for major redevelopment at the airport, which will see all traffic transferred to Borg El Arab in 2010. Located 40 km south-west of central Alexandria, Borg El Arab Airport is planned to become the primary airport for the metropolitan area, and is undergoing major a expansion of passenger and cargo handling capacity. The airport has been successful in attracting LCCs from across the region, with start-up JV Air Arabia Egypt locating its base at the airport.
