US carriers to slash fourth quarter trans-Atlantic capacity as Europe's outlook dims

25-May-12 3:30 PM

Increasing economic uncertainty in Europe has resulted in US carriers pulling back capacity to the continent later this year to proactively contain losses and a drop-off in traffic that could result from the increasing likelihood of Greece’s exit from the euro zone and the Euro falling to a two-year low against the US dollar. Delta has already stated its goal to reduce capacity 5% across the Atlantic during the fourth quarter, while United has already instituted schedule changes that show a pull-down in secondary European markets. US Airways, which during the last year has enjoyed marked success in its trans-Atlantic business segment, has not declared any plans regarding its capacity to Europe later in the year. But the carrier is launching several seasonal services on the back of its strong performance in the European market.

Trade group Airlines for America (A4A) estimates that during the fourth quarter of this year US carriers will reduce their capacity to Europe by 7.8% as they attempt to better manage seasonality and stave off effects of a recession on the continent. This change is significant as Western Europe is still the largest international market from the US.

Worldwide airport investor community relatively upbeat - ACI Economics & Finance report, Part 1

14-Mar-12 2:45 PM

The fourth Airports Council International Economics and Finance conference took place in London, UK, between 07-Mar-2012 and 09-Mar-2012, attracting some 250 speakers, panellists and delegates and with a notably strong representation from Africa. Despite the continuing economic downturn, especially in Europe, the conference, which covered a wide range of topics from ‘the State of the Industry’ via several sessions on airport investment and performance management to airport competition and performance management, was generally upbeat, at least for the long term. Some of the major issues discussed are highlighted below, with the remainder to follow in a later article.

Full year airport financials again confirm sector resilience

7-Mar-12 10:32 AM

Whatever the difficulties of the airline business, the airports that support their activities are making out quite well, at least according to the raft of annual financial results for FY2011 released at the end of Feb-2012. In fact, apart from Athens Airport, which has its own problems at the moment, and – surprisingly – Copenhagen Airport, all the airports in this sample improved on their financial result, even if that merely meant reducing losses by comparison with the previous period.

Veni, Vidi, Vinci – We came, we saw, we bought airports

25-Nov-11 12:24 PM

French conglomerate Vinci makes a welcome return to international airport financing and operations as its division Vinci Concessions – which calls itself “private partner of public interest” – let it be known that it has aspirations to acquire Hochtief’s airport assets, although it appears, so far, not to be attracted by BAA’s Edinburgh Airport.

Europe's fringe carriers look for partners to overcome financial crisis; Cyprus Airways latest

7-Sep-11 11:57 PM

Airlines on Europe's southern and eastern periphery are becoming more precariously positioned, but are looking for for partners to help overcome the growing financial crisis. Cyprus Airways is the latest such carrier, and reported a widening in first half losses in the six months to 30-Jun-2011, as lower top-line revenue fell and higher fuel costs squeezed the airline in the period. Cyprus Airways is also turning to implementing a raft of measures aimed at stemming operating losses.
