Berlin Schönefeld is an international airport serving the metropolitan region of Berlin, Germany. Schönefeld Airport is part of the Berlin Airports system, which comprises Tegel and Tempelhof (now closed) airports. Schönefeld is the second-largest and the most distant of the three Berlin airports, and is the main gateway for low-cost carriers serving the area, with easyJet and Ryanair major operators at the airport. Berlin-Brandenburg International Airport, the new Berlin airport, is being developed on the site of Schönefeld, replacing the current airport system in Berlin. Berlin-Brandenburg International will have a capacity of 27 million passengers per year, and is expected to easily accommodate the current 22 million passengers that travel through the current Berlin airport system each year.

German airlines adjust strategies as outlook darkens

28-Sep-11 3:20 PM

Germany’s two largest airline groups, Lufthansa and Air Berlin, have announced wide-ranging measures to either preserve profitability, in the case of the former, or restore profitability, as they grapple with a gloomy regional economic outlook. Air Berlin, sandwiched between the low-cost and full-service space, will reduce its exposure to the struggling German leisure segment, which has been on a downward spiral all year.

Germany, the de facto leader of the European Union and a major underwriter of the bailout packages as a large holder of European sovereign debt, has been hit with renewed, and increasing, recession fears. German investor confidence fell to its lowest in more than 2.5 years in Sep-2011, the ZEW Center for European Economic Research said on 20-Sep-2011.

Berlin Airports completes ‘internal funding’ process for BBI as it doubles revenues in 2010

20-Apr-11 4:05 PM

The airport operator representing Germany’s capital city, Berlin, released its financial report for 2010. Berlin is served by Tegel and Schoenefeld airports and the new Berlin Brandenberg International (BBI) airport, based around Schoenefeld, is scheduled to open in Jun-2012. Once intended as a private airport initiative it now seems that the operator, representing both local and national government interests, has been able to complete its "internal funding" of the BBI project.

Ryanair in the dock

21-Feb-11 10:00 AM

Ryanair may have to repay millions of euros as Germany’s highest court ruled fees it has received to operate from airports may amount to subsidies in breach of EU competition rules. Lufthansa and airberlin have been awarded the right to pursue legal action accordingly. Together with the other difficulties the Irish airline faces in Germany could this be the beginning of the end for its operations there? Or might there be even more significant outcomes?

easyJet CEO, Andrew Harrison Ash and snow take a bite out of easyJet, but still profitable

13-May-10 3:45 PM

Mother nature is going to cost easyJet as much as GBP100 million this year, but the UK-based LCC does not expect that to prevent it from posting a healthy profit. Winter snow disruptions in 2009 and 2010 resulted in losses of approximately GBP25 million. The recent ash-related airspace shut downs are expected to cost another GBP50-75 million.

easyJet CEO, Andrew Harrison easyJet keeps rolling out the expansion plans, for now

17-Dec-09 5:13 PM

On 09-Dec-2009, Andy Harrison, CEO of easyJet handed in his resignation, effective Jun-2010. He is only the second CEO the airline has had. The airline was quick to emphasise that his departure was specifically not connected with this year’s board challenges to his leadership strategy.
