After a longstanding public service concession granted by the State to Bordeaux Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIB), the airport's operations and management were awarded, for a thirty-year period starting on 02-May-2007, to Bordeaux Mérignac Airport Société Anonyme (ADBM SA) with capital divided up between the State, the CCIB and local authorities.

European woes force changes for the better at Indian Ocean carriers, with Air Austral the latest
Hardest hit from the European economic situation, aside from the carriers that have collapsed, are far away from continental Europe in the Indian Ocean, which contains the self-proclaimed Vanilla Islands grouping of countries: La Reunion, Madagascar, Mauritius and Seychelles. These nations' carriers are largely dependent on European leisure traffic, which has evaporated in the dual threat of weakening economies and high fuel prices that provide no stimulation to whatever demand is left.
The starkness of the situation has been demonstrated most recently by Air Austral, which over the northern winter will reduce its long-haul network to a single destination and will postpone – or possibly cancel – its order for two Airbus A380s, following it being unable to pay for a new Boeing 777 awaiting delivery. Air Austral is also looking to partner with Air Mauritius to maintain a connection to Australia, a further sign that the situation in Europe is forcing the Vanilla Island carriers to make medium/long-term strategy changes that will finally strengthen them. Etihad Airways earlier this year acquired a stake in Air Seychelles and is now lending management oversight to the Seychelles flag carrier while the region's other carriers have conducted overdue network reviews.
Airlines in transition: Hybrid and low-cost carriers push for better airline-airport relationships
Alex Cruz, CEO of Spanish LCC Vueling, spoke passionately at a recent conference of his need to see partnerships between airports and airlines that are deep and long-lasting. Mr Cruz referred specifically to co-operation that permits both partners to benefit from alternative revenue generation. Ahead of the forthcoming CAPA Airlines in Transition conference in Istanbul – which will feature some 30 airline CEOs addressing this and related issues – we consider how these parties have collaborated in the past and how it is shaping up now.
Vueling Airlines has become one of the innovators of the hybrid/low-cost business model that has become more prevalent and is found in other airlines such as easyJet (progressively) and Flybe (one of the originators of the model).
The fast changing airline industry makes life difficult for airport planners – just as change also offers opportunities.
‘State capitalism’ evident in the airport sector?
The Economist magazine has recently presented evidence in several articles that suggests the propensity for industrial and commercial intervention by the state in rich countries is increasing. It pointed to the Japanese Government’s desire to create a "Japan Inc", deepening the links between business and government, and the lavishing of money by the state on banks and carmakers in the US and Europe.
A tale of two French airports: Brive and Bordeaux
Two new French airport facilities opened within 150 km of each other in Jun-2010, and although they essentially target much the same sort of customer, the airports concerned, Bordeaux and Brive, are going about it in quite different ways. Bordeaux is putting its hopes on a new low cost terminal named ‘Billi’ while Brive, an entirely new airport (a rare phenomenon in Europe and overlooked by much of the continental media), looks towards regional services to help establish it, at least in the first instance. In the background there is the nagging question – are there too may airports in this thinly populated part of France?
Ash and snow take a bite out of easyJet, but still profitable
Mother nature is going to cost easyJet as much as GBP100 million this year, but the UK-based LCC does not expect that to prevent it from posting a healthy profit. Winter snow disruptions in 2009 and 2010 resulted in losses of approximately GBP25 million. The recent ash-related airspace shut downs are expected to cost another GBP50-75 million.
Ryanair operations at French regional airports threatened by Air France legal offensive
The perennial issue of protectionism v. liberalism in air transport has again come under the spotlight in recent months. This month (Mar-2010) the Canadian government is locked in battle with Emirates and Etihad over market access, which the government believes would hinder Air Canada’s direct long haul services. Previously there have been similar disputes in Germany, where, last November, the government bluntly told Emirates to raise its fares in the market or face being fined. Now, in a different but equally important scenario, Air France has launched what is, to date, the biggest legal challenge to discounts on airport charges and assistance with marketing costs that Ryanair has encountered.
