Air Malta troubles worsen as unions flex muscle and LCCs grow
Air Malta’s troubles have become more acute as the struggling carrier’s unions increase their opposition to large-scale redundancies. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has stated the present situation is increasingly worrying, particularly in light of the EUR77 million the government has poured into the airline since Jun-2011.
easyJet report paints bleak picture of APD effects
British LCC easyJet commissioned research on the UK government’s proposed changes to the already punitive Air Passenger Duty (APD). It paints a bleak picture in which the already tumbling UK air passenger figures drop by a further 3 million p/a, incoming tourist spending reduces by GBP475 million a year and 77,000 jobs are lost. It is a warning to all countries that have upped their aviation taxes, or intend to, although it looks as if the Irish government’s decision to withdraw its tourist tax might become permanent.
UK’s Newcastle and Cardiff airports seek long haul flights
Once it was short haul services that were in demand from UK’s regional airports, now it seems that the desire to avoid travelling via a hub has spread to the mid to long haul arena, as difficult as it may be to justify some of the proposed services. The latest airports to investigate the level of demand for long haul flights are Newcastle and Cardiff.
easyJet keeps rolling out the expansion plans, for now
On 09-Dec-2009, Andy Harrison, CEO of easyJet handed in his resignation, effective Jun-2010. He is only the second CEO the airline has had. The airline was quick to emphasise that his departure was specifically not connected with this year’s board challenges to his leadership strategy.
Macquarie Airports – time to ‘come home’?
The Australia-based Macquarie Airports (MAp) released its financial report for the three and six month periods ending 30-Jun-09. Once again, Sydney continues to outperform the other airports in the stable, which are spread across four continents. With the UK’s Bristol Airport seemingly available for sale if and when economic conditions improve, indeterminate prospects for the European mainland airports, a strategic withdrawal from Japan and Mexican airport prospects at the mercy of pestilence and destructive weather elements on a Biblical scale, is it now time for MAp to retrench to its Australian base?
MAp flies the coop as Macquarie transforms its airport model
The entire Macquarie Bank management strategy is changing, as the Bank seeks to retire debt and reverses away from the trust and management-fee driven model which it perfected during the good times. Macquarie today announced that Macquarie Airports, MAp, was to be “internalised”. That is, it will become a standalone operation, acquiring the two Australian trusts which are part of the MAp stapled structure, as well as terminating the European Macquarie Capital Funds agreement with Macquarie Airports Limited.
