British and Irish airport investments continue busy merger and acquisition activity
If there was any doubt that the UK & Ireland remains one of the most dynamic air transport markets in the world that suspicion was dispelled by the level of recent and potential activity in airport M&A.
With Edinburgh Airport about to change hands, Glasgow Prestwick and Manston (Kent) airports may follow this year, as will London Stansted, later. Cardiff Airport’s CEO resigned after a politician complained about lack of investment by the operator and there are plans to re-open Plymouth Airport under new ownership.
Meanwhile, in Ireland, the case has been made for a change of ownership at Shannon Airport - but not an outright privatisation – signaling the potential break-up of the Dublin Airport Authority.
Manic Monday as airport privatisation reappears on the radar – at least in Europe
It was a case of Manic Monday on 18-Apr-2011 as a raft of actual or potential airport equity sales in Europe were notified through CAPA reports, more than have been seen at any one time during the last two years. But is it a case of caveat emptor?
bmibaby ceases Cardiff and Manchester operations to expand at Belfast, East Midlands, Birmingham
bmibaby stated it would cease all operations from Cardiff and Manchester Airports at the end of the summer 2011 schedule. As a result, four bmibaby aircraft based at the two airports will be redeployed to Belfast, East Midlands and Birmingham. The airline currently operates 40 weekly services from Manchester and 30 weekly services from Cardiff to European destinations.
EBITDA margin reveals best performed airports

European and Middle East carriers fighting for market share on Europe-Middle East route
European carriers are becoming increasingly concerned by the Middle East airline threat on their core international businesses. CEOs from British Airways, Air France and Lufthansa have all voiced their opinions lately, as Middle East airlines continue to expand their global networks. But the European flag carriers are not standing idly by. Several are rapidly expanding their presence in the Middle East, to maintain and/or grow their share of this promising market. Emirates is the clear market leader, with a 21.0% share of capacity on Middle East-Europe routes. Qatar Airways is the second largest, with 8.7%, while Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France have just 5.6%, 3.5% and 2.7% shares, respectively.
UK’s Birmingham Airport in the sights of Middle East investors
Towards the end of Sep-2010 reports emerged from the English Midlands that Birmingham Airport, partly owned by two pension funds, could be sold to Middle East investors as part of a package of assets to fund other projects.
