Natural and man-made events cloud airport investment
From volcanic eruptions and earthquakes to blizzards and floods, the world has been unsettled by a wave of natural disasters in the past year. Coupled with "man-made" events, such as the political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, at what point will private operators decide that airport investment under such circumstances is not worth the risk?
TAV on course to double passenger numbers by 2020; Aggressive expansion paying off
Turkey’s TAV Havalimanlari Holding AS (TAV Airports Holding), Turkey’s largest airports operator, has reported its financial estimates for the full year 2009. Anticipating growth in revenues and EBITDA, TAV has shrugged off a difficult start to 2009 when it was bogged down with the outlay on a new airport in Tunisia and insufficiently controlled costs. Expanding in Turkey, Africa, the Balkans and the Middle East, TAV continues to reap benefits accruing from the reborn Turkish Airlines, an airline that, with a whole raft of geographical, economic and social factors in its favour ‘could have been Emirates, before Emirates’.
Global economic crisis and financing of Tunisian airport heralds 1Q09 loss for TAV
TAV experienced a setback in 1Q09 as it reported a net loss in a period influenced by its expansion into Morocco and by the global economic crisis generally. However, the solid performance of airline THY in its domestic market and TAV’s capacity consistently to win major airport construction projects indicate this may be no more than a temporary blip.
