Girona-Costa Brava Airport is an international airport serving the city of Girona, in the Catalonia region in north-west Spain. Girona has experienced strong growth over the past decade, due almost entirely to Ryanair's decision to locate a major base at the airport, which is located just under 100km to the north of Barcelona and increasingly seen as an alternative airport to Barcelona El Prat. Ryanair, interestingly, now operates a significant base at El Prat Airport. Girona also handles seasonal traffic from a variety of leisure-oriented airlines in the summer months.

Ryanair's presence makes Barcelona Europe’s fastest growing major airport
Barcelona El Prat Airport is Europe’s fastest-growing major airport, eclipsing growth rivals Munich, Istanbul Ataturk and Moscow Sheremetyevo. Now that Barcelona has had a full year of the 'Ryanair effect' since the LCC's arrival at the Catalonian facility, growth rates should start to moderate.
Air Malta troubles worsen as unions flex muscle and LCCs grow
Air Malta’s troubles have become more acute as the struggling carrier’s unions increase their opposition to large-scale redundancies. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has stated the present situation is increasingly worrying, particularly in light of the EUR77 million the government has poured into the airline since Jun-2011.
Ryanair in the dock
Ryanair may have to repay millions of euros as Germany’s highest court ruled fees it has received to operate from airports may amount to subsidies in breach of EU competition rules. Lufthansa and airberlin have been awarded the right to pursue legal action accordingly. Together with the other difficulties the Irish airline faces in Germany could this be the beginning of the end for its operations there? Or might there be even more significant outcomes?
Ryanair moves away from traditional bases for smaller, cheaper destinations
Ryanair has been moving away from larger hubs this year, particularly in the UK and Ireland, and has more recently threatened to cut its route network in Germany. The carrier attributes the moves to tourist and departure taxes introduced by various governments. As a result, the carrier has been establishing bases and expanding services in smaller, cheaper destinations in Continental, Nordic and Eastern Europe. Ryanair recently overtook flag carrier Iberia as the largest in Spain, suggesting this strategy is working for the carrier.
End of an era: Ryanair continues shift away from UK/Ireland
Ryanair, the second largest carrier in the UK, announced plans to reduce UK winter capacity by 16% from Nov-2010, stating the decision will result in the loss of more than 2 million passengers at UK airports over winter 2010 on a year-on-year basis.
Vueling responds to the Ryanair threat at Barcelona
Vueling President, Josep Piqué, stated the carrier plans to add up to 418 new weekly services from Barcelona’s El Prat Airport from 05-Jul-2010, adding that he expects passenger throughput at the airport to increase by more than 10% in 2011. In response to Ryanair’s announcement it was opening a base at El Prat in Sep-2010, Mr Piqué stated the effect on airfares will have to be assessed. Meanwhile, Vueling’s General Manager, Alex Cruz, stated the carrier expects to become the second largest LCC in Europe this year.
