Glasgow Prestwick Airport serves the Greater Glasgow metropolitan region in Scotland. The airport is located near the town of Prestwick, 32 miles from central Glasgow. Prestwick is among the fastest growing airports in the UK, fuelled by growth from low-cost carriers including Ryanair and Wizz Air. These carriers serve destinations across Europe, with charter airlines serving the airport in the summer months. Prestwick Airport is an important cargo airport in Scotland and is owned by New Zealand-based infrastructure investment company Infratil.

Scotch broth: Investors positive about Edinburgh airport sale but what would they be taking on?

25-Oct-11 12:23 PM

Under pressure from the UK’s competition watchdog and still trying desperately to stave off the sale of London Stansted Airport, BAA has opted to sell off Scotland’s Edinburgh Airport rather than nearby Glasgow, a move that was anticipated by some but queried by others. Less than a week after the announcement, Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), Manchester Airports Group (MAG), Fraport and Aeroports de Paris (AdP) have already put themselves in the frame. All of them need to read the small print.

Some observers have been quick to suggest Edinburgh was the “logical choice” for a sale of one of BAA’s Scottish airport assets (Aberdeen, possibly the airport with the best prospects in the country, was never in the mix), and were supported by an announcement by BAA CEO Colin Matthews who stated BAA chose to sell Edinburgh rather than Glasgow Airport because it believes Edinburgh will attract more bidders and command a higher price. "I want to be clear that we would prefer to keep both airports, but given we had to sell one the decision was pretty straightforward," he said. Mr Matthews added Edinburgh should "generate a long line of bidders" as it had proved to be resilient during the economic downturn.

Air Malta troubles worsen as unions flex muscle and LCCs grow

8-Jul-11 3:42 PM

Air Malta’s troubles have become more acute as the struggling carrier’s unions increase their opposition to large-scale redundancies. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has stated the present situation is increasingly worrying, particularly in light of the EUR77 million the government has poured into the airline since Jun-2011.

EBITDA margin reveals best performed airports

As a tough year for the aviation industry comes to a close, a review of EBITDA margins achieved by a variety of airport operators globally reveals some surprising results.

Where next for Infratil?

9-Jun-10 12:21 PM

New Zealand’s power, utilities and transport conglomerate Infratil has released financial highlights for the 12 months ended 31-Mar-2010. They show that revenue and EBITDAF increased at Wellington Airport but both fell at Infratil Airports Europe (IAE), which now comprises just Glasgow Prestwick Airport and Kent International Airport, both wholly owned, since Germany’s Luebeck Airport returned to public sector control. Revenue at AEI was down dramatically. Infratil perseveres with the two European airports, but market conditions will continue to be tough for both of them. Even so there is some light at the end of the tunnel.

“Don’t get robbed” pleads Jet2.com as it sees its fortress base under attack from Ryanair

17-Aug-09 4:40 PM

North of England-based LCC Jet2.com reacted robustly to Ryanair’s announcement of 11-Aug-09 that it planned to make Leeds Bradford Airport (LBA) its 34th base from Mar-2010, by imploring its customers not to “get robbed” by Ryanair, which it implied charges its passengers more for baggage and sports equipment, also for online and airport check-in. Jet2.com has had things largely its own way at LBA, as the airport’s largest customer, let alone largest LCC, but does this latest challenge from Ryanair signify Jet2.com might focus its route development elsewhere or even shift operations altogether?
