China Airlines, Taiwan’s largest carrier, joins SkyTeam. Big impact in crucial North Asian markets

28-Sep-11 4:50 PM

The SkyTeam alliance has taken another step forward in cementing its place in the fast-growing North Asian aviation market by adding China Airlines, Taiwan’s largest carrier and the world's seventh largest cargo carrier (by international scheduled FTKs - or eighth largest by total system FTKs), to the fold on 28-Sep-2011. China Airlines' entry comes just three months after China Eastern Airlines and Shanghai Airlines joined the grouping in Jun-2011. China Airlines will be the first Taiwanese carrier to join a global alliance, with rival EVA Air remaining unaligned.

China Airlines will become the 15th member of the SkyTeam airline alliance (see Appendix for full list of alliance groupings). By joining SkyTeam, the Taiwanese carrier will expand its international coverage nine-fold via codesharing to 926 destinations in 173 countries across 14,000 services from the current 1010 destinations in 29 countries.

Corporatised airport authority attempts to restore Taipei as an East Asian hub

19-Feb-10 11:29 AM

Frequently overlooked in the wider scheme of the Northeast Asian air transport, and with local international airlines that have struggled over the past few years, Taiwan is often overlooked in the region. But since President Ma promised 12 projects to drive the economy forward in his 2008 election manifesto, there is a new sense of urgency to restore Taipei’s Taoyuan International Airport and the associated Aerotropolis as an East Asian hub. A state-run company is being set up to operate them. Terminal 1 is being expanded and a new T3 will be built on a BOT basis, inviting in foreign capital and management expertise for the first time – something that has been missing for too long. But these airport development projects will depend on Taiwan's success in positioning its economy strategically in the region over the coming years, with a critical six months ahead.

Can scheduled cross-Strait services deliver rich rewards?

16-Sep-09 5:00 PM

Taiwan and Mainland China launched regular (scheduled) cross-Strait services on 31-Aug-2009, ending a six-decade absence. It is a major step forward for relations across the Taiwan Strait and comes at a crucial time for airlines on both sides that are feeling the effects of dramatically weakened demand on international routes.

Cross-Strait flights boosted, even more to come?

6-May-09 5:20 PM

Mainland China and Taiwan have struck a significant agreement to increase the number of flights across the Taiwan Strait from 108 to 270 this Summer. This will also change the designation from ‘charter’ to ‘scheduled’ services, in yet another sign of a warming of relations. Since June 2008, the two sides have reached six milestone agreements on weekend charter flights (which became weekday flights in Dec-2008), tourism, direct shipping, air transport, postal services and food safety.

Aviation core to Mainland China-Taiwan harmony

13-Jun-08 12:13 PM

Mainland China and Taiwan have held their first direct talks since 1999, reaching agreement on the only item on the agenda – direct weekend charter services. The talks resumed as part of a warming in relations following the election of Ma Ying-jeou as Taiwan's President in Mar-08.
