easyJet report paints bleak picture of APD effects

23-May-11 10:39 AM

British LCC easyJet commissioned research on the UK government’s proposed changes to the already punitive Air Passenger Duty (APD). It paints a bleak picture in which the already tumbling UK air passenger figures drop by a further 3 million p/a, incoming tourist spending reduces by GBP475 million a year and 77,000 jobs are lost. It is a warning to all countries that have upped their aviation taxes, or intend to, although it looks as if the Irish government’s decision to withdraw its tourist tax might become permanent.

The "Fair Tax on Flying" alliance is the latest in a long list of organisations to call on the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer to follow the lead of other European governments in abandoning taxes on airline passengers. Meanwhile, a group of senior Conservative politicians and business leaders wrote to a national newspaper to call on the government to cancel its "vanity" high-speed rail project, “a GBP30 billion train set that only a minority of fortunate passengers can use".

Global Airport Development Conference delivers upbeat outlook

6-Dec-10 9:38 AM

The 17th annual Global Airport Development (GAD) conference and attendant Investing in Airports summit were held in Dublin, Ireland, from 15 to 18-Nov-2010, attracting around 230 speakers and delegates at the main conference.

Airports struggle with life after Ryanair

11-Nov-10 3:41 PM

Ryanair has been cancelling or suspending services at a wide range of airports across Europe, including in countries where it is growing. Is there any discernible strategy here or is it no more than coincidence, as a result of too many disagreements with airports? What future prospects are there for smaller airports when Ryanair decides to quit?

UK’s Birmingham Airport in the sights of Middle East investors

6-Oct-10 4:10 PM

Towards the end of Sep-2010 reports emerged from the English Midlands that Birmingham Airport, partly owned by two pension funds, could be sold to Middle East investors as part of a package of assets to fund other projects.

End of an era: Ryanair continues shift away from UK/Ireland

5-Jul-10 4:08 PM

Ryanair, the second largest carrier in the UK, announced plans to reduce UK winter capacity by 16% from Nov-2010, stating the decision will result in the loss of more than 2 million passengers at UK airports over winter 2010 on a year-on-year basis.
