London City Airport serves the City of London and is a major business aviation facility in London. London City serves mainly the financial district in London and is located on a former Docklands site three miles from Canary Wharf and six miles from the City of London. The only airport actually within London, London City is the fifth-largest airport serving the city and its operations are restricted to STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) aircraft. The airport serves over 30 business centres across Europe and North America.

Unstoppable march of the airport funds
The US-based Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) stated in Dec-2011 it is raising funds to expand its airport portfolio in 2012. Senior partner Michael McGhee told the Invest and Manage Conference in London the investment fund was "in the process of raising a second fund to spend in the airport sector". Few investment funds were involved in the airport M&A business at its height in the late 1990s/early 2000s but they are very much at the forefront of what is happening now. So, who are they?
London City Airport optimistic for remainder of 2011
London City Airport (LCY), on the doorstep of London’s commercial and financial districts and London’s developing EastEnd, reported a broadly level number of passengers in 1Q2011 to 1Q2010. However, the airport remains confident that 2011 will be a positive year and that traffic should surpass last year’s 2.8 million passengers.
Global Airport Development Conference delivers upbeat outlook
The 17th annual Global Airport Development (GAD) conference and attendant Investing in Airports summit were held in Dublin, Ireland, from 15 to 18-Nov-2010, attracting around 230 speakers and delegates at the main conference.
London City Airport - a marketable proposition?
Amidst the turmoil surrounding the sale of London Gatwick Airport last year and the Oct-2010 Court of Appeal ruling that confirms the sale of Stansted Airport, it is often overlooked that Greater London and the southeast of England is home to at least seven commercial airports serving the catchment area. One of them, London City Airport – LCY - (the only one actually within London) has been arguably the most successful in recent years in terms of passenger traffic growth. There is a suggestion that it could be sold off in 2011 by its majority owner GIP, which now has London Gatwick airport in its portfolio as a competitor to London Heathrow. What benefits might LCY offer to an investor now?
BAA again forced to sell two airports
BAA once again finds itself forced to sell two of its remaining six airports as Britain’s Court of Appeal upheld and reinstated the Competition Commission’s (CC) decision from Mar-2009 that it must sell London Stansted Airport and either Glasgow or Edinburgh airports in Scotland. BAA’s original argument was that the sale of London Gatwick Airport had been ‘forced on it’ (though it took the decision to sell in advance of the formal announcement) at a bad time economically and that it did not want to repeat the exercise any time soon. The knock-on effect might be considerable as Ryanair ramps up its efforts to convince the Irish government to break up and sell off parts of the Dublin Airport Authority.
‘State capitalism’ evident in the airport sector?
The Economist magazine has recently presented evidence in several articles that suggests the propensity for industrial and commercial intervention by the state in rich countries is increasing. It pointed to the Japanese Government’s desire to create a "Japan Inc", deepening the links between business and government, and the lavishing of money by the state on banks and carmakers in the US and Europe.
