Luxembourg opening to LCC competition with the entry of easyJet

30-Apr-12 10:15 AM

The tiny Luxembourg market has been thrust into the spotlight by easyJet’s announcement that it plans to launch the first low-cost carrier service into the small European nation. With no domestic market in Luxembourg, national carrier Luxair relies on a short/medium-haul international network serving Europe and Africa. The arrival of LCC competition will place pressure on the flag carrier, which may find it difficult to compete with budget rivals.

Luxair, which is the only Luxembourg-based passenger carrier, currently offers 36,285 seats per week, according to data from Innovata. Western Europe accounts for about 90% of the carrier’s total capacity (seats) and all 10 of the carrier’s largest routes.

World Airport Rankings 2010: Hong Kong eclipses Memphis as the world’s busiest cargo hub

16-Mar-11 3:43 PM

It’s official: Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is the world’s busiest cargo hub – ending Memphis International Airport’s 18-year reign at the top of the world rankings. HKIA’s rise to the top reflects surging exports from China’s Pearl River Delta, while Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific became the world’s largest international air cargo carrier last year, overtaking Korean Air.

Adios Abertis Airports?

21-Jul-10 3:45 PM

The Barcelona-based Abertis Infraestructuras, one of the major European infrastructure conglomerates along with Ferrovial, Dragados y Construcciones (also of Spain), Atlantia (Italy) and Vinci (France) is the subject of a potential buyout involving CVC Capital Partners one of the world’s five leading private equity firms. It is being suggested that ‘non-core’ assets might be sold off. Could they include the airports?

Iceland Express CEO, Matthias Imsland Iceland - discount competition for the original transatlantic discounter

16-Jun-10 2:00 PM

The LCC Iceland Express launched four times weekly Keflavík-New York Newark service on 01-Jun-2010, with the carrier reporting that bookings on the route have been "very good". Owned by the Icelandic investment company Fengur, a sister company of Fons Eignarhaldsfelag, which took over the original owner, Northern Travel Holding, Iceland Express appears to have escaped the meltdown of the Icelandic financial services sector.

European ATM - 2010: The year of the aviation strike?

1-Jun-10 4:08 PM

2010 could well be the year of the aviation industry strike, particularly in Europe, where the combination of cost cutting, lay-offs and a slow-boil on the economic recovery is creating a simmering mix of worker militancy. Pilot, cabin crew and air traffic controller (ATCO) strikes have simmered across the continent over the first half of the year, even as airlines and related industries attempt to climb out of the worst crisis the industry has seen in 70 years.
