Ontario may want out of Los Angeles World Airport’s control
All of California’s secondary airports, in both the Los Angeles and San Francisco regions, have been hard hit since the economic collapse as airlines retrenched at the major hub. But LA/Ontario International Airport (ONT), 35 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, has been particularly hard hit to the extent that some are calling for its release from Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA).
Competing bills to influence US airport privatisation prospects
Two US senators from Illinois have introduced competing bills dealing with infrastructure privatisation. One of them, Democratic Senator Dick Durbin, introduced a measure that would require repayment of any previous federal grant monies the airport (or other infrastructure provider) had received, in the event of it being privatised. In contrast, Republican Senator Mark Kirk aims instead to encourage such privatisation. His bill would remove the limit on the number of airports that can be privatised and ease other restrictions.
Airports of Canada’s leading cities report positive EBITDA gains in 2010
Two of Canada’s leading airport operators, Toronto’s GTAA and Aeroports de Montreal, released their financial report for the year ending 31-Dec-2010. Both are not-for-profit corporatised organisations, typical of the halfway house privatisation that applies to most of the major Canadian gateway airports, and one that has attracted some attention in the US. Both report EBITDA gains but AdM still trails Toronto in passenger volume by quite a margin.
Natural and man-made events cloud airport investment
From volcanic eruptions and earthquakes to blizzards and floods, the world has been unsettled by a wave of natural disasters in the past year. Coupled with "man-made" events, such as the political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, at what point will private operators decide that airport investment under such circumstances is not worth the risk?
LA’s Ontario Airport returns as a privatisation prospect
Los Angeles World Airports (LAWA) issued a request in the first week of Jan-2011 for expressions of interest (REOI) for the management and operation of Ontario International Airport. After a couple of years where it had heavy traffic losses there are wildly differing opinions about its future.
Sydney's second airport still an endangered species as taskforce reviews options and costs
In Sep-2010, Australia’s Department of Infrastructure and Transport released a tender to finance firms to provide modelling on five different scenarios for a second Sydney airport: how they would be paid for and how well they would cater for transport needs in 10, 25 and 50 years. But a second Sydney Airport still looks as far away as ever.
