European and Middle East carriers fighting for market share on Europe-Middle East route
European carriers are becoming increasingly concerned by the Middle East airline threat on their core international businesses. CEOs from British Airways, Air France and Lufthansa have all voiced their opinions lately, as Middle East airlines continue to expand their global networks. But the European flag carriers are not standing idly by. Several are rapidly expanding their presence in the Middle East, to maintain and/or grow their share of this promising market. Emirates is the clear market leader, with a 21.0% share of capacity on Middle East-Europe routes. Qatar Airways is the second largest, with 8.7%, while Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France have just 5.6%, 3.5% and 2.7% shares, respectively.
Ryanair moves away from traditional bases for smaller, cheaper destinations
Ryanair has been moving away from larger hubs this year, particularly in the UK and Ireland, and has more recently threatened to cut its route network in Germany. The carrier attributes the moves to tourist and departure taxes introduced by various governments. As a result, the carrier has been establishing bases and expanding services in smaller, cheaper destinations in Continental, Nordic and Eastern Europe. Ryanair recently overtook flag carrier Iberia as the largest in Spain, suggesting this strategy is working for the carrier.
Indra awarded more contracts to upgrade Moroccan ATM
Moroccan airport and ANS authority, Organisation Nationale de la Sécurité Aérienne (ONDA), has awarded Spanish IT company, Indra, several contracts to improve the country’s air traffic management systems. Indra started supplying ONDA with technology in 2002 with a contract to develop radar information processing simulator for air controller training.
