Mariscal Sucre International Airport (also known as Quito International Airport) serves the capital city of Ecuador, Quito. The airport is the major international gateway to Ecuador and is operated by Quiport, a privately-owned investment firm formed by Canadian, American and Brazilian entities that have also invested in the city's new international airport, to be known as New Quito International Airport. Due to several air transport-constraining factors, including Quito's high altitude and surrounding mountainous topography, the airport's inner-city location, and built-up urban areas around the airport, opportunities for growth are very limited. Mariscal Sucre International is to be closed and replaced with the New Quito International, which will be located 18km to the city's east.

But then the role of anti-trust immunity enters from stage left…

CAPA Regional Manager UK and Ireland, David Bentley Latin American governments shift military facilities into commercial use

30-Jul-09 4:15 PM

Two governments – those of Ecuador and Panama – announced in Jul-09 that they would convert military bases into commercial airport facilities. The Ecuadorean government sees the potential for a new regional hub at what was the US military’s narcotics surveillance base at Manta Eloy Alfaro International Airport while in Panama the government is keen to attract European tourists through the disused Howard Air Force base.
