Guararapes International Airport serves the city of Recife on Brazil's north-east coast. One of the country's largest metropolitan areas, the city is the region's commercial and industrial centre. The airport ranks among the country's busiest outside of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro and has connections to cities across South America. The city is an increasingly popular tourist destination and is served by European charter airlines. As a 2014 FIFA World Cup host city, Infraero is completing a terminal upgrade to expand facilities.

Panama's Copa pursues more rapid expansion with Las Vegas, Curacao, Liberia and potentially Recife
Panama’s Copa Airlines is continuing its rapid expansion by opening at least three new routes in June, which will increase its hub of Americas operation at Panama City to a market leading 59 destinations. As is typically the case with Copa, the carrier is evenly distributing its network expansion in 2012 to different regions with Las Vegas in North America, Curacao in the Caribbean, Liberia in Central America and potentially Recife in South America being added. Again typical for Copa, all the routes are not currently served by any carrier and Copa will initially operate them with less than daily frequency.
Brazil’s aviation infrastructure scramble
Brazil is due to host two of the world’s largest sporting events over the next six years. The traffic surges forecast for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and then for the 2016 Olympic Games, as well as the anticipated post-event increases in international tourism, will present major challenges for all segments of the Brazilian aviation industry.
TAM, Brazil’s new global airline, consolidating domestically, leveraging internationally
TAM, Brazil's network carrier now provides both a comprehensive domestic network and is fast expanding its intercontinental reach. This, the third in a CAPA series on Brazil's airlines, looks at TAM's rise, resilience and outlook.
Airline alliances in Latin America provoking major changes. How TAM helps Star
Despite strong growth in several markets, Latin America’s aviation scene is in flux—perhaps more so than any other geographic region on the globe. Political and economic instability have been rampant across the region and continue to be a part of the 21st century landscape. The latest difficulties have been manifest as political unrest in Venezuela and continuing economic turmoil in Argentina, to name just two.
Brazil leading Latin American traffic recovery
The Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (which comprises of 38 member airlines operating more than 800 aircraft in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Cayman Islands, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Curacao, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Netherlands Antilles, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Venezuela and Uruguay) reported a 6.9% increase in domestic passenger numbers in Aug-2009 to 7.1 million passengers, with a domestic load factor of 65.9% (-0.1 ppts).
GOL losing load factor battle again
GOL, the Brazilian LCC, had appeared to be arresting the decline in its load factor in Jan-2009, but it slipped again for the second consecutive month in Mar-2009. GOL reported an average load factor of 54.9% last month, declining 2.2 ppts year-on-year, despite capacity cuts of 12.8%.
