Oman awards USD1.8bn new Muscat terminal project
Oman’s Government announced it has awarded an OMR706 million (USD1.8 billion) contract for the construction of a new terminal at Muscat International Airport, to a joint venture between US-based Bechtel and Oman's Bahwan Contracting. The government stated the project will be completed in 3Q2014 and the airport’s capacity will increase from four million passengers p/a to 12 million.
Middle East airports report frenetic traffic growth in 1Q2010
1Q2010 traffic results at three major Middle East hubs – Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Bahrain international airports – were nothing short of spectacular. The airport operators are also confident this performance can continue in 2010, with new airlines and increased frequency confirmed for Summer 2010 (2Q2010 and 3Q2010).
Middle East airport capacity crunch looming?
The ten leading Middle East hubs are investing some USD48 billion in new/expanded airport projects over the next 30 years, which will provide capacity for an additional 320 million passengers p/a. This will take the leading hubs' total capacity to just over 460 million passengers p/a. But will it be enough? Long term growth forecasts suggest the Middle East region as a whole will need capacity for 600-700 million seats p/a within 20 years, while project delays and cost-over runs could also create a capacity crunch in the Middle East. This could threaten governments' national aviation and tourism development programmes and undermine the high quality and efficient product offerings of the region's airlines.
