Azul achieves targeted domestic market share of over 3%

Azul Linhas Aéreas Brasileiras, the new Brazilian airline established by JetBlue founder, David Neeleman, has achieved its targeted 2009 market share of 3% just half way into the year. According to Brazil’s national Civil Aviation Agency (Anac), the LCC’s market share in the Brazilian domestic market reached 3.6% in Apr-2009.

GOL losing load factor battle again

GOL, the Brazilian LCC, had appeared to be arresting the decline in its load factor in Jan-2009, but it slipped again for the second consecutive month in Mar-2009. GOL reported an average load factor of 54.9% last month, declining 2.2 ppts year-on-year, despite capacity cuts of 12.8%.

Air traffic control still causing disruption in Brazil

Recent radar outages at Sao Paulo Congohas Airport, the busiest in Brazil and South America, resulting in the cancellation of more than 50 flights and delays to 20 others, have highlighted the fragile nature of the nation’s air traffic control (ATC) sector, and the underinvestment in Brazilian aviation as a whole. Caused by power blackouts, and the failure of backup systems, the failure follows the blackouts that affected the country in 2006.

Football and airport privatisation - Brazil sets new goals

The Brazilian Defence Minister, Nelson Jobim, has indicated that the Brazilian Government may privatise the operations of state-owned Galeão-Antônio Carlos Jobim (Rio de Janeiro) and Viracopos/Campinas International (Sao Paulo area) airports. The move is part of preparations for the influx of visitors during the 2014 Soccer World Cup and as Brazil bids to host the 2016 Olympic Games. The privatisation process will reportedly commence in 2009.
