Air Malta troubles worsen as unions flex muscle and LCCs grow
Air Malta’s troubles have become more acute as the struggling carrier’s unions increase their opposition to large-scale redundancies. Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has stated the present situation is increasingly worrying, particularly in light of the EUR77 million the government has poured into the airline since Jun-2011.
Ryanair goes medium haul. Is a Middle East hub the goal as it pushes the limits?
The announcement last week from Ryanair that it intends to include Larnaca, Cyprus in its list of destinations raises some interesting questions. Not least amongst them is, just how far can LCCs travel using the business model that is in place now? So far Ryanair has shied away from long haul (transatlantic) operations, which its management knows would require a significant adjustment to the short/mid haul model, though it still insists it will do it one day. It seems Ryanair (or Michael O’Leary) has spoken to airport management in the U.S., for example Niagara Falls airport, about hosting the first route. Now it appears though that Ryanair may be looking at tapping into the Middle East market, by using Larnaca as a base.
Ryanair remains profitable and maintains full year profit target; profits hit by ash cloud in 1Q2011
Ryanair remained profitable in the three months ended Jun-2010 (1QFY2011) reporting a quarterly profit that exceeded analysts’ estimates, with the carrier also forecasting that fares may rise by as much as 15% in the current period (after increasing 5% in the Jun-2010 quarter).
End of an era: Ryanair continues shift away from UK/Ireland
Ryanair, the second largest carrier in the UK, announced plans to reduce UK winter capacity by 16% from Nov-2010, stating the decision will result in the loss of more than 2 million passengers at UK airports over winter 2010 on a year-on-year basis.
Vueling’s 2010 expected to beat 2009 results, but it won’t be smooth flying
Vueling maintained its guidance for an improved net profit in 2010 upon the release of its financial results for the three months ended Mar-2010 (1Q2010). This is despite the negative effects of the recent European airspace closures, which resulted in 482 cancelled services affecting 72,249 passengers, and the sovereign debt crisis enveloping Spain, Greece and Portugal. The carrier previously guided that it “expects to report even better results in 2010 than in 2009,” noting that more than 60% of the merger synergies between Vueling and Iberia’s LCC subsidiary, clickair, would be experienced in 2010.
Vueling expecting to report improved results in 2010
Vueling expects to report improved financial and traffic results in 2010, follwing its merger with Clickair earlier this year, with 60% of the expected merger synergies expected to be accrued in 2010.
