LOT Polish Airlines continues Asian growth with Beijing as 787s eyed for further expansion
LOT Polish Airlines is progressing with its new “east meets west” network strategy in 2012 as it prepares to launch service to Beijing, its second Asian destination, in June. Another milestone for LOT will be reached in 4Q2012, when the carrier is slated to become the first European operator of the Boeing 787. Privatisation is also a possibility for LOT in 2012 although given current market conditions this is looking increasingly unlikely.
A new airport for southern Poland?
While Warsaw, the capital, is Poland’s largest city with close to two million inhabitants, there is a huge population base of some four million in, between and around the cities of Krakow and Katowice in southern Poland, with twice as many in the surrounding region. In light of both airports experiencing problems, and the military conversion at Modlin Airport near Warsaw scheduled to open in 2012, a question that has been asked before is back in fashion: should there be a new airport in southern Poland too?
Questions asked of UK's aviation shortcomings as European airports cope with snow
For the fourth time in three years air transport in northern Europe, and especially the UK, has been hard hit by severe winter weather, which has dumped heavy snow across the continent. As has happened previously, there have been mass flight cancellations and the travel plans of hundreds of thousands of people using London Heathrow Airport over the Christmas period have been put in jeopardy. Now the recriminations have started.
CAPA’s Hottest Airlines to watch in 2011: Europe
The European airline market was battered by the global financial crisis, recording a combined loss of USD4.3 billion in 2009, according to IATA. Europe's tepid economic recovery, the ash cloud crisis, difficulties in cutting capacity and massive structural changes within the short-haul market have conspired to make 2010 another challenging year. Losses are anticipated at USD1.3 billion in 2010, making it the only region to be unprofitable in an otherwise strong year for recovery elsewhere. But there are some bright spots in the region. In this report, CAPA reviews the European airlines expected to make waves in 2011.
European and Middle East carriers fighting for market share on Europe-Middle East route
European carriers are becoming increasingly concerned by the Middle East airline threat on their core international businesses. CEOs from British Airways, Air France and Lufthansa have all voiced their opinions lately, as Middle East airlines continue to expand their global networks. But the European flag carriers are not standing idly by. Several are rapidly expanding their presence in the Middle East, to maintain and/or grow their share of this promising market. Emirates is the clear market leader, with a 21.0% share of capacity on Middle East-Europe routes. Qatar Airways is the second largest, with 8.7%, while Lufthansa, British Airways and Air France have just 5.6%, 3.5% and 2.7% shares, respectively.
European aircraft movements to remain around 2006 levels this year
2009 was a dramatic and traumatic year for EUROCONTROL, the European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation. Not only did traffic decline by 6.6%, but the economic situation had a dramatic and lasting impact on its airline and aviation customers, as Europe faced up to its “most challenging year… in living memory”.
