The national carrier of Algeria is Air Algerie, which dominates the network from its main hub at Houari Boumedienne Airport and secondary hub at Oran Es Senia Airport. The carrier operates domestic and international services.

The Algerian Ministry of Transport, Algers, controls and oversees aviation, however, services for safety and air navigation are outsourced to Etablissement National de la Navigation Arienne (ENNA).

The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority has developed a new organisational structure to transform its management of flight management control operations and safety and security quality standards. GCAA launched its Comprehensive Transformation Programme in 2010 and has already developed new financial and strategic plans.

Cairo Airport has been met with chaotic scenes in the past few days as thousands of foreigners seek to leave. Ryanair goes medium haul. Is a Middle East hub the goal as it pushes the limits?

The announcement last week from Ryanair that it intends to include Larnaca, Cyprus in its list of destinations raises some interesting questions. Not least amongst them is, just how far can LCCs travel using the business model that is in place now? So far Ryanair has shied away from long haul (transatlantic) operations, which its management knows would require a significant adjustment to the short/mid haul model, though it still insists it will do it one day. It seems Ryanair (or Michael O’Leary) has spoken to airport management in the U.S., for example Niagara Falls airport, about hosting the first route. Now it appears though that Ryanair may be looking at tapping into the Middle East market, by using Larnaca as a base.

Egyptair CEO, Hussein Massoud EgyptAir targeting improved full-year profits; no LCC plans yet, as new entrants increase pressure

EgyptAir Holding company Chairman and CEO, Hussein Massoud, stated the carrier plans to increase full-year profits by nearly a third, commenting that the carrier is currently “making a profit", and adding: "We are planning to see more this year”. The company is targeting a USD132 million profit in the 12 months to Jun-2011, a 31% year-on-year increase.

Turkish Airlines moving into Africa: will Turkey emulate China?

Turkish Airlines (THY) is being encouraged to launch services between Istanbul and Lusaka, the capital of Zambia. It is not the first time that the airline has been linked to new African services but on this occasion comes the admission there is a wider agenda involving trade and specifically mining and energy. Could Turkey be about to emulate China, which has been flooding the African continent with executive manpower - especially where there are sparse resources to be mined - using essential air transport as bait?
