The aviation industry within Israel is comprised of a few main carriers. El Al is Israel’s national flag carrier operating international services from its main hub at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv, which is the main international gateway to Israel. Ben Gurion International is also used by Sun d'Or International Airlines as its main hub. Domestic and regional services ex Tel Aviv are operated out of Sde Dov airport, which is the main hub for Arkia Israel Airlines, Ayit Aviation and Tourism, Israir Airlines and Tamir Airways. Outside of Tel Aviv, Chim-Nir Aviation is an airline based at Herzliya Airport.
The Security Department of the Israeli Ministry of Transport operates the Aviation Security Operations Center (ASOC) to control the security procedures for the arrival of aircraft into and through Israeli airspace. The Civil Aviation Authority of Israel is the regulator for the civil aviation sector responsible for promoting aviation safety, development, maximising the level of aviation transport services, safeguarding Israel's air carriers; minimalising environmental impact; and implementing government policy concerning civil aviation.

El Al's Sao Paulo departure highlights carrier's stagnation
El Al's cancellation of its thrice-weekly flights between its Tel Aviv base and Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos Airport come after the carrier began the route two years ago. It has cited high fuel and security costs as reasons for its termination.
Over the past few months, a variety of initiatives have been taken by El Al to reverse its weakening financial position. Temporary staff will be jettisoned, fuel-inefficient aircraft will be retired and second bag charges have been imposed on some routes. But despite these efforts, profitability remains elusive.
El Al swings to net loss in 2Q2011. Shake-up in Israeli market ahead?
El Al Israel Airlines swung to a net loss of USD19.7 million in the three months ended 30-Jun-2011 (2Q2011) from a USD14.8 million net profit in 2Q2010, as costs grew at nearly three times the rate of revenue. The Tel Aviv-based carrier felt the impact of increasing fuel costs, a stronger shekel and rising competition in the quarter, prompting CEO and President Elyezer Shkedy to note that the company is working to adapt its strategies to meet challenging commercial realities.
European airlines ramp-up capacity to China
Asia Pacific, particularly China, is one of the current destination hotspots for European carriers, with connections between Europe and China improving in recent months and over the past couple of years. The initial focus was obviously on providing connectivity between key European hubs and the capital city of Beijing, with services to Shanghai also quite extensive, although a number of carriers are adding service to secondary, albeit still large destinations in China, such as Chengdu, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Chongqin, Urumqi, Sancha, Dalian and Harbin.
“Global” security still a distant goal
Aviation is faced with constant and often changing challenges but none has proven as intractable as the question of security in an age of terrorism. Following 9/11, the US put in place a vast number of policies that continue to be controversial both at home and abroad. And those actions have had wide-ranging effects.
Russia, Turkey and Sweden the hottest destinations for European travellers this Summer. Egypt down
Russia, Turkey and Sweden are among the fastest growing major destinations for European travellers this summer, latest analysis from CAPA shows. According to Innovata schedule data for Apr-2011 - the first month of the summer scheduling season - Russia and Turkey will enjoy near 20% increases in passenger capacity from other European countries next month.
Natural and man-made events cloud airport investment
From volcanic eruptions and earthquakes to blizzards and floods, the world has been unsettled by a wave of natural disasters in the past year. Coupled with "man-made" events, such as the political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, at what point will private operators decide that airport investment under such circumstances is not worth the risk?
