Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, located in the northeast Caribbean Sea. Puerto Rico is a group of islands including the main island (Puerto Rico) and the smaller islands of Vieques, Culebra, and Mona. Puerto Rico has three main international airports; Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in Carolina, Mercedita Airport in Ponce, and Rafael Hernández Airport in Aguadilla. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is the busiest airport and serves the largest and capital city, San Juan. The airport is a major hub of aviation activity in the Caribbean, handling some 10 million passengers p/a, and serving airlines from across the region. US airlines have a dominant presence across Puerto Rico's major airports, with Executive Airlines (a division of American Eagle) operating the majority of regional services to destinations across the Caribbean.

Privatisation in Russia and the US – two key deals on the horizon

26-May-11 3:48 PM

Russia’s Moscow Domodedovo International Airport is considering launching an IPO on the London Stock Exchange, according to its management company DME Limited; potentially a risky venture. Meanwhile, Puerto Rico’s drive to lease airports and other infrastructure is gathering speed as the US unincorporated territory prepares to market an offer to lease out San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport.

Natural and man-made events cloud airport investment

23-Mar-11 2:04 PM

From volcanic eruptions and earthquakes to blizzards and floods, the world has been unsettled by a wave of natural disasters in the past year. Coupled with "man-made" events, such as the political unrest in the Middle East and North Africa, at what point will private operators decide that airport investment under such circumstances is not worth the risk?

Now it’s about fuel – again

7-Feb-11 11:44 AM

In 2007-2008 the airlines most feared the rising cost of fuel and, especially in the US, used the expense to dramatically cut service, scale back operations, retire aircraft and reduce capacity. But the positive effects of those actions were almost immediately negated by the recession, which brought a whole new set of problems.

US update – 2011 a make or break year for airport privatisation

21-Dec-10 9:53 AM

Almost two years after the privatisation by lease of Chicago’s Midway Airport fell through, 2011 will be a ‘make or break’ year for those who would like to see more US airports attracting private capital and management (and there are plenty that don’t). Conversely, there are signs that at least one US airport operator is looking to Europe, possibly in an investment capacity.

Ancillary revenues: GAO report and Subcommittee hearings promise more regulations

19-Jul-10 7:55 PM

The much awaited GAO Report on ancillaries coincided with last week's House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Aviation Subcommittee hearings. These were all about transparency, taxes along with populism, as it became open season on Spirit Airlines President and CEO Ben Baldanza, as Congress turned its attention on airline fees. The outcome is likely to be pressures - and most probably more regulations - to require greater transparency - and even, possibly, rolling back ancillary charges. There was also talk of (perhaps double) taxation of such charges. Regulations would also cover foreign airline disclosure, if the GAOs recommendations are accepted.
