Formed from the merger of Snecma and SAGEM in 2005, SAFRAN Group is an integrated aerospace, defence and security conglomerate, based in Paris France with more than 30 subsidiaries. Around two thirds of the company’s workforce is based in France. SAFRAN operates across more than 30 countries, including subsidiaries in the US, Canada, Brazil, Australia and China. The company is divided into Aerospace Propulsion, Aviation Equipment and Defence – Security units.
- Aerospace Propulsion has three major companies: Snecma (jet engines), Turbomecha (turboprop engines) and Snecma Propulsion Solide (solid rocket motors). Aerospace Propulsion generates more than 50% of the group’s revenue. Tracing its history back through Gnome & Rhônem and Snecma, Safran, can claim to be the world’s oldest aircraft engine manufacturer.
- Aviation Equipment comprises six companies: Messier-Dowty (landing gear), Messier-Bugatti (brakes., steering and landing equipment), Aircelle (engine nacelles), Labinal (aircraft wiring), Hispano-Suiza (power management and transmissions) and Teuchos (engineering and consulting).
- Defense –Security provides technologies and services in optronics, avionics, electronics, safety-critical software and biometric and other security systems. Companies are Morpho and Sagem, which also produces tactical drone systems. The unit received a major boost in mid-2009 when it announced the acquisition of 81% of GE Security’s Homeland Protection business for USD580 million.
